The saying goes that brewers only make the wort, it's the yeast that makes beer. Brewers have been making wort for millennia and the practice has literally become a science in the modern era of brewing. Fermentation, on the other hand, is a lot more guess work especially for the simple homebrewer. You have an idea of how much yeast to pitch, what temperature to keep during fermentation, and what you want your final gravity to be but other than that there's no more information to know or gain during fermentation. Even most of that information can be quite inaccurate as most homebrewers are using stick on thermometers that don't give a true reading of wort temperature and in order to check the gravity throughout fermentation you will either lose some volume of beer and/or expose the wort to the air which can be a source of infection.
Then the PLAATO Airlock was invented.
Back in July, I was continuously seeing Facebook ads for a new Kickstarter campaign for PLAATO "The Digital Airlock" and after a few ads I finally clicked on the link to see what was so special. I was immediately intrigued when I started reading up about this airlock!
Here's the run down from the PLAATO website:
"PLAATO is a brand new way of analyzing your ongoing fermentation.
FINALLY! A way to track fermentation metrics instantly at any point during the process and from any place in the world with WiFi! The PLAATO Airlock is a bit more expensive (est. retail ~$150) than your typical 3-piece airlock (~$1) but I feel that if you are trying to take your brewing to the next level then the information that PLAATO provides is invaluable.
I hopped on board and ordered two PLAATO's through their Kickstarter campaign for $200 (savings of $100). They had hoped to raise $30,000 with their Kickstarter campaign but ended up raising over $200,000! The Kickstarter campaign has since ended BUT they have continued to raise fund through an Indiegogo campaign, so order yours now while you can!
I reached out to the founders for a few questions and they graciously answered:
This is a behemoth of an airlock standing 6.3 inches tall with a 1.7 inch diameter and weighing in at 0.33 pounds! Every part of the airlock is made of Tritan® BPA-free high grade plastics that can be cleaned with StarSan, bleach and other products available.

The Kickstarter airlocks are due to ship out in October and the Indiegogo airlocks in December. So, if you want to get someone the perfect addition to their "brewhouse" for Christmas then order yours now!! I'll be formally reviewing this product after a couple of brew session and have high hopes!
